"...if Jacks wishes were carried out, about his ashes I mean."
What else could she have meant? IS this a hint about some kind of knowledge about Ennis & Jack?
Is this just a Texan expression which shouldn't be read too deep?
I would like to hear other peoples opinion on this. |

I believe neither was homophobic just terrified (esp. Ennis) of being found out and the consequences. The pressure to conform and be accepted is powerful and would have caused great anxiety for both of them when they both realised (within themselves) what they thought and felt about each other.
Giving something a label makes life easier to put people into little boxes and say "Oh he's gay" and have a caricature in the mind of who that person is and how they tick. I think we all do it, its natural. However, the point is, do we question our labelling of these little boxes and the people within?
Ennis positively glowed when in the prescience of Jack, I do not see someone who was uncomfortable about his affection for him only about the consequences if others found out. Some point out Ennis’s’ inability to voice his true feelings for Jack with the motel scene where Jack corrects himself and confesses that he knew that he was “going to get into this again” and “redlined it all the way, I couldn’t get here fast enough”. When Jack asks Ennis “What about you?” I don’t see a person who is homophobic, but someone who has difficulty in expressing his emotions. Isn’t it easier when you can’t articulate to just say ‘I don’t know’?
Lets not forget Ennis and Jack are what, 23? Maximum 24 at the motel scene, give em both a break!
For fear of rambling and making a complete arse of myself I shall end it here.
Spleen vented:-) |
